The real reason you're not getting the offer (and how to fix it)

Hey reader,
I want to start with an uncomfortable truth: the best candidate doesn’t always get the job.
You might recognise this. You've poured your heart into an application. Carefully crafted your CV. Practiced your interview answers. You nail every single interview round, feeling your hope building up with each round. Then, hearing the infamous words “you’re a great candidate, but…”. The most frustrating rejection to receive (and often without context and feedback…)
This doesn’t just sting. It burns.
Month after month, interview after interview, you're left wondering: What am I missing? Why am I always the bridesmaid, never the bride of the professional world?
From my experience working with 25+ women in the past year, helping them land their next jobs in Tech, I can confidently say that being the constant runner-up but never the one getting any offers is usually due to a lack of good storytelling and not selling your value.
Why stories matter more than you think
Here's a brain science hack most people don't know: When you tell a compelling story, something magic happens in the listener's brain. Neuroscientists have found that good stories trigger oxytocin - the "connection hormone" that makes people trust and like you.
Literally, your story can create a neurological bond with the interviewer. Incredible, isn't it?!
Contrast this with most candidates who just… word vomit. Rattling off achievements without context, jumping between random experiences, leaving the interviewer feeling confused and disconnected.
A structured story does three critical things:
Creates an emotional connection between you and the interviewer.
Makes complex information memorable, making YOU memorable.
Demonstrates your problem-solving skills and your fit for the role in a way that data never can.
The interviewer is not just hearing facts, but experiencing your career journey.
Storytelling is transformative. Doing it right will 2x your offers and give you the choice of where to go next.
Proof that the right stories change everything
I worked with an incredible woman recently, who was landing interviews, but couldn’t get past the 3rd or final round and she was burning through amazing opportunities. We focused on packaging her results and achievements into compelling and impactful stories that connected her CV, LinkedIn profile and interview examples to the challenges her target companies are facing. She signed her offer within 6 weeks of us working together!
If you’ve been nodding along and know you need help crafting your own compelling career stories, now is the right time to take action. Tech companies are actively hiring for roles starting in early 2025. I have 2 open coaching spots in December to help you transform your career results and achievements into impactful stories that will get you noticed and hired. Book an introduction call with me here to discuss the details.
Talk to you soon,
Jenn
