The juicy truth about interview rejections

Hey reader,

Let's talk about something that's part of every career journey but doesn't get enough attention: dealing with interview rejections. Whether you've just faced one or you're in the middle of processing those emotions - I see you, and I want you to know that it's completely normal for it to sting.

Even the most talented women I work with, who are now thriving in their roles, faced rejection along their journey. But what sets them apart isn't that they never got rejected, it's how they chose to handle those moments.

What if we looked at this moment not just as a setback, but as a powerful growth opportunity? Here's how to navigate this moment with intention:

1. Feel your feelings (but don't let them drive)

It's totally okay to feel disappointed. Take a day off if you need it. Order that fancy coffee, go for a walk, or chat with your best friend. Please remember that this is one company's decision at one specific moment in time. It's not a reflection of your worth or potential.

2. Take control of the feedback

Ever caught yourself thinking "I NEED their feedback to improve"? While feedback can be helpful, YOU get to choose what feedback serves your growth.

If you didn't get specific, actionable feedback but felt confident about your interview stories and examples, chances are you did an AMAZING job! In today's competitive market, decisions often come down to tiny differences, or sometimes factors completely outside your control (like an internal candidate or someone with a pre-existing relationship with the team).

Instead of dwelling on these uncontrollable factors, try this powerful approach:

  • Reflect on the interviews while they're fresh in your mind

  • Write down what went well (yes, there were things that went well!)

  • Note specific moments where you wish you'd answered differently

  • Identify any patterns across multiple interviews

  • Channel your energy into your next opportunities

3. Transform the rejection into redirection

Every 'no' is guiding you toward your perfect 'yes'. I've seen countless women getting rejected from roles only to land something even better weeks later. Each interview makes you sharper, more prepared, and clearer about what you really want.

4. Take intentional action

Instead of dwelling on what you can't control, focus on what you can:

  • Refine your interview stories based on what resonated most

  • Practice articulating your value and impact even more clearly

  • Review if this role/company was truly aligned with your career goals

  • Keep building relationships because that recruiter who liked you might have the perfect role come up next month

And please remember that the women who seem to "easily" land amazing roles often faced multiple rejections before finding their perfect fit. The difference? They transformed each 'no' into fuel for their growth, making them even more ready for their ideal role when it appeared.

What you can do next:

  1. Acknowledge where you are right now (it's okay if it's not a great feeling)

  2. Pick one learning from this experience to strengthen your next interview

  3. Keep showing up for the opportunities that excite you

  4. Trust that each interview is moving you closer to your ideal role

You've got this, and I'm here cheering you on!
