Save these 6 tips for your next interview!

“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.” — Oprah Winfrey

Hey Reader,

Have you ever walked away from an interview feeling frustrated, unprepared, or unsure of how to tell your story?

Many of us have! One of the most common points of anxiety for women in tech is authentically presenting themselves and their careers in the interview process.

This is where the ‘I’ in my THRIVE framework comes in – Impress. This is all about telling your career story in a clear and powerful way and showcasing the value you can bring to your next employer.

I - Impress

Why ‘Impress’ Matters

Preparation is the key to impressing in interviews and really standing out from the crowd. Simply spending 10 minutes preparing or trying to wing it in an interview won't be enough in today's competitive market.

Focusing on the target companies that you know you want to work for means it’ll be well worth it to put in the work. Ultimately, the better you prep, research, and practice, the better you’ll be at showing why you are the right person for this role.

Here's what you can do to 'Impress':

  1. Go beyond the basics with your research - look into your interviewers’ backgrounds and details such as the company’s goals, values, and annual reports.

  2. Create a truly compelling story about how your experience and results will add value to the company and make you the ideal candidate for the job.

  3. Learn how to answer the most common interview questions in a way that ‘wows’ your interviewers.

  4. Practice your interview answers out loud with a friend, family member, coach, mentor - or even record yourself on your phone!

  5. Write down thoughtful questions to ask the interviewers.

  6. Finally, follow up by sending your interviewers thank you notes and keeping your recruiter up-to-date.

Real Life Impact → Meet Sarah

"I didn’t realize I was down-talking myself in interviews," said one of my clients during our 1:1 coaching session. She was hesitant to 'brag,’ which resulted in underselling her accomplishments, rambling without a clear goal, and feeling unsure about how to improve.

In our work together, I walked her through how to tell a compelling story and present her value effectively. Now, she knows exactly:

✅ What hiring managers are looking for in interviews.

✅ How to structure her answers so they’re clear and to the point.

✅ How to present her achievements and value in a way that feels authentic and confident.

Impress is all about how you can move through each interview stage successfully, with the ultimate goal of landing an offer. By focusing on preparation, storytelling, and authentic self-presentation, you can transform your interview experiences and truly impress your future employers!

In our next issue, we’ll dive into the second-to-last step of the THRIVE method, Validate. This is where I guide you through what to do when your target company has officially offered you the job!

Jenn
