Set yourself up for success in your new role!

“Starting a new job can be nerve-racking, but it's also exciting. You're embarking on a new future, positioning yourself to write a fresh story on a clean slate.” - Adena Friedman, President and CEO of NASDAQ, inc.

Hey Reader,

Congratulations on landing that amazing tech job! You've worked hard to get here, and now it's time to shine in your new role. Let's explore how you can set yourself up for success from day one and make a lasting impact in your new company.

This brings us to the 'E' in my THRIVE method - Excellence.

E - Excellence

Why Excellence Matters

Starting a new job can be overwhelming, exciting, and stressful all at once. Having a clear structure and plan for your first few months can help you navigate this transition smoothly and set you up for long-term success.

The Power of a 30/60/90 Day Plan

A 30/60/90 is more than a to-do list, it’s a strategic document outlining your goals and priorities for your first three months. You can start by referring back to the job description that got you excited in the first place! Highlight the main responsibilities and think about concrete actions you can take to meet (and exceed) these expectations.

30 Days: Be curious—ask questions and learn as much as you can. Understand the company and department objectives, their product or service, and their internal systems. Build relationships with your team, stakeholders, and manager.

60 Days: Establish structure and align with team and company priorities. Identify challenges the team faces and propose ideas for quick wins.

90 Days: Reflect on your first 60 days. Apply your learnings and feedback to improve your work and make a stronger impact.

By creating and following through with this plan, you're not just onboarding - you're actively shaping your role and building your personal brand within the company. Remember, your 30/60/90 day plan is a living document that you can adjust as you learn more about your role and the company.

My Tips for Success

  1. Bring your 30/60/90 day plan to your first 1:1. This shows initiative and helps align your goals with your manager's expectations.

  2. Schedule regular check-ins. Book weekly or bi-weekly chats with your manager to discuss your progress, achievements, and any challenges you're facing.

  3. Be proactive. Don't just wait to see what the company brings to you. Take initiative in your onboarding process and seek out opportunities to contribute and learn.

  4. Focus on relationships. Build connections across the organization. Your network is crucial for future opportunities.

  5. Stay curious. Ask questions, seek feedback, and always be open to learning! This mindset will set you apart.
